Al is a
senior executive and consultant with extensive experience in a wide variety of
daily operations including administration, information
systems, marketing, customer service, and compliance and contracts.
He is a leader with a strong cross-functional
corporate background skilled in working with business and technology
leaders. His proven track record in strategic
planning, business analysis, project management,
expense reduction, business process redesign, change management, and the
use of technology has met and exceed corporate goals. He is a demonstrated
problem solver with the ability to create and maintain a strong organization and
to communicate issues and solutions to management and across the organization.
Most
recently, Al has been engaged by Saxon Publishers, Inc., a mid-sized privately-held educational publishing company, to support a variety of initiatives
including extensive strategic planning, in-depth profit analysis, management
report design and implementation, inventory control review, and health benefit
plan analysis. As the Saxon family owners began to develop an exit strategy Al’s
previous contributions to the company’s operations and knowledge of the merger
and acquisition processes were recognized as he became a charter member of the
“deal team”. Al proved invaluable in the development of accurate and timely
responses to due diligence inquiries and was responsible for the analysis and
preparation of the schedules to the final agreement. His support of the
family’s objective and commitment to the team contributed to the Saxon owners
realizing a premium price in excess of 11 times EBITDA.
Al has
also been instrumental in conducting discovery review and analysis and preparing
damages calculations supporting pending litigation of a multi-million dollar
claim against a former manufacturing agent. Additionally, he provided litigation
support and analysis for the resolution of a key author royalty dispute.
Not long
ago, senior management and members of the investment team for Southwestern Life
Holdings, Inc. put together a turnaround Team. As Senior Vice President and
member of the Team, Al participated in the charge to bring the company back to a
profitable position. His efforts were unusually successful leading to a 50%
return to investors at the sale of Southwestern.
As a
successful Account Manager and Project Director for Computer Sciences
Corporation, Financial Services Group Al developed and managed client
relationships and directed multi-million dollar administrative system
implementations. These projects were delivered on time and at 97% of budget.
As
Vice President Individual Administration for
Transport Holdings Inc., Al managed the daily
operations of underwriting, new business, customer service, policy changes,
central records and the call center. While working with Transport, he built a
staff of management professionals and implemented management systems changes
leading to improved productivity and reduced annual costs, saving the company
$3,000,000 over five years.
Al is an
Associate of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of
Actuaries. He is Six Sigma Black Belt certified. He received his Bachelor of
Science in Applied Mathematics from California Polytechnic State University. Al
served in the United States Coast Guard where he advanced to the rank of
Lieutenant Commander.
